Where it is

The peninsula south of Kennedy

South Tampa is the Interbay Peninsula: Kennedy Boulevard to the north, Old Tampa Bay on the west, Hillsborough Bay on the east, and MacDill Air Force Base filling the southern tip. It is all inside the city, and it holds some of Tampa's oldest neighborhoods next to some of its newest rebuilds.

The main roads run in two directions. Dale Mabry Highway and West Shore Boulevard go north and south down the middle; Bayshore Boulevard follows the east shore. Across them run Bay to Bay Boulevard, Gandy Boulevard, which is US 92 and the way onto the Gandy Bridge, and the Selmon Expressway near the north edge.

Part by part

Neighborhoods, ZIPs and parking

ZIP codes are those the Census Bureau's 2020 files place inside Tampa for this part of the city. Some ZIPs span more than one neighborhood.

A street spot works if the car can sit there for the job and the technician can get around both sides. Tell us if it is a permit or time-limited space.

Old streets

Built before the driveway

Hyde Park started in the 1880s, after Henry B. Plant built a bridge over the Hillsborough River at Lafayette Street; the first house went up in 1882 on Morrison Avenue. Swann and Rome Avenues are wider than the streets around them because a streetcar once ran there. Port Tampa City was founded in 1885 at the end of Plant's railroad and only joined Tampa in 1961. Davis Islands was pumped up from the bay floor by D. P. Davis in the 1920s.

For an install, old streets often mean less room off the street than a newer suburb gives you, so the job may happen on a short driveway or at the curb outside the house. If the only spot is the street, park where the car can stay put for the job, with room for the technician to stand on the traffic side safely.

Storm water

Where to park when the bay rises

South Tampa sits low and close to the water, and Hurricane Helene showed what that means. The National Hurricane Center's report on the storm records the tide gauge at Old Port Tampa at 6.83 feet above the normal high-water line, with 5 to 7 feet of flooding above ground inside Tampa Bay. Tampa General Hospital, at the north end of Davis Islands, is described as sitting in an "A" flood zone.

When a storm is coming, look up your zone on Hillsborough County's Evacuation Zone Lookup, and if you are told to leave, take the car with you or move it to higher ground. A car that sat in salt water is a claim for the adjuster before it is a glass job. Our flood or glass claim guide explains how to tell the two apart.

Bayshore

Four and a half miles of seawall

Bayshore Boulevard runs 4.5 miles along the seawall, and its walkway goes from Columbus Statue Park to Gandy Boulevard without a break. After a fatal crash in May 2018 the city lowered the speed limit from 40 to 35 miles an hour. On a windy day, spray off Hillsborough Bay can reach the road and the cars parked beside it, so rinse the windshield before you run the wipers.

South Tampa questions

Tell us the street and where the car is parked when you call our Tampa line, (727) 270-8521, or text a photo to (877) 350-5962.

I only have street parking in Hyde Park. Can you still do the job?

Usually. The car needs to stay in one spot for the install with room to work on both sides. Tell us if the space has a time limit or a permit rule.

Can you work on Davis Islands?

Yes. Davis Islands is part of our South Tampa area. Give us the street and say whether the car is in a driveway, a garage or at the curb.

My windshield cracked on the Gandy Bridge. Will you come to me in Ballast Point?

Yes, once the car is parked at home or work. We don't install on a road shoulder or a bridge approach.

Cracked windshield south of Kennedy?

Send the VIN and tell us where the car parks. We fit the glass at the curb, the driveway or the garage, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.
