The glass

What a broken door window looks like

Most door windows are tempered glass. When one breaks it does not crack and hang on: the whole pane collapses into small square pebbles, most of which fall inside the door, where you can't see them. That is why a smashed side window rattles for weeks if only the cabin gets swept.

Some newer cars use laminated glass in the front doors to cut road noise. A laminated door window cracks in a web and stays in the frame, much like a windshield. It still has to be replaced, and it is a different part from the tempered version for the same model, so the VIN matters when you ask for a quote.

What this service covers

  • Front and rear door windows on cars, SUVs, minivans and pickups
  • Tempered and laminated door glass, matched by VIN
  • Glass pebbles cleared out of the door, the window channel and the seats we can reach

The police report

Who takes the report depends on the address

Around Tampa Bay a "Tampa" mailing address can sit inside the city or out in unincorporated Hillsborough, and that decides which agency writes the report. Each agency lists what it accepts online; check its page before you file.

What police here have seen

“Tickets of Education” on Tampa windshields

In November 2015 Fox 13 followed the Tampa Police Crime Prevention Team through a MacDill Avenue apartment complex. Officers peered through car windows without opening any doors and left a notice on each windshield, ticking one box if they saw no valuables and another if they did. That morning they spotted a purse, a wallet, cash, three GPS devices, iPods and an iPad in plain view.

The point of the notices still holds. The team was looking for what a thief would want, so take bags, chargers and electronics inside. Bring the key fob in too: the lieutenant quoted in the story warned that a fob left in a push-start car lets a thief drive off with it.

Until we arrive

Keep the rain out of the door

  • Photograph the window, the door and anything taken before you clean up. Your insurer and the report may both ask for them.
  • Tape heavy plastic over the opening from the outside, on paint that is dry. On a summer afternoon a storm can roll in before you finish.
  • Park under a roof or with the broken side away from the wind if you can.
  • Leave the window switch alone. Running the motor with glass pebbles in the channel can jam it.
  • Pick up the big pieces from the seat, and leave the rest for us. We clear the inside of the door too.

At your car

How the swap goes

  1. Door panel off

The technician takes off the inside trim panel to reach the window channel and the regulator that lifts the glass.

  2. Glass cleared

Broken glass is vacuumed out of the bottom of the door, the channel and the seats, so it does not rattle or scratch the new pane.

  3. New window set

The new glass goes into the regulator, and the window is run up and down to check that it seals at the top.

  4. Panel back on

Trim, switches and speakers are reconnected, and the cabin gets a last pass with the vacuum.

If the glass is whole but the window will not move, the regulator or motor has failed. That is a mechanical repair and not work we take on.

Window film

Tint on a new door window

New door glass comes clear of any add-on film. If your old window had film on it, a tint shop can film the new one once it is in. For the two windows beside the driver, Florida's tint law says the glass with its film must let at least 28 percent of light through and reflect no more than 25 percent. A shop that films a front window darker than that is putting you on the wrong side of the law; the Florida window tint guide on our main site has the full rules.

Paying for it

Your deductible on door glass

Florida's no-deductible rule for windshields does not reach door windows. A side window claim goes under the comprehensive deductible on your policy, and with a high deductible paying for the glass yourself can cost less than claiming. Give us the policy and we tell you both numbers before anything is booked, and if you go the claim route we help you file. The full statute table is on our Florida insurance page.

Tampa Police will not take my car burglary online. Can the glass wait for the report?

It does not have to. We can set the new window before you have a report number. Some insurers ask for that number on a break-in claim, so make the non-emergency call to TPD, then check with your insurer before you file.

My car has a Tampa address but I live in Carrollwood. Who do I call?

Carrollwood is unincorporated Hillsborough County, so the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office takes the report, not Tampa Police. The same goes for Town 'n' Country, Brandon and Riverview.

Can you replace a window in a USF-area apartment lot?

In most complexes, yes. Send the gate code or call box name and any vendor sign-in the leasing office asks for, and tell us where the car is parked.

Will the new window match the factory tint on my SUV?

Many SUVs have tinted privacy glass built into the rear door windows from the factory. We order the matching glass for your VIN, so a factory-tinted window is replaced with a factory-tinted window.

Door window gone? Send the VIN.

We quote the exact glass for your car and fit it where it is parked, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm, across Tampa Bay.
