When a windshield carries a driver-assist camera, swapping the glass means aiming the camera again. If yours needs it, we tell you up front, before any work starts, and do it in the same visit where the procedure can be done on site.

Why it matters

Fresh glass moves the camera's view

The camera sits in a bracket on the inside of the windshield and watches lane lines, signs and traffic through a small window in the glass. Set a new windshield and that view shifts very slightly. Over the length of the Howard Frankland, a tiny angle error puts the camera's idea of your lane somewhere else, so it gets calibrated back to the vehicle maker's specifications.

On most cars we handle it at the end of the same appointment. Some procedures call for a test drive on clearly marked roads or a target setup that won't fit in a tight driveway, and when that applies to your car we say so before booking, not on the day.

What it controls

Systems that look through your windshield

  • Lanes

    Lane-keep assist

Nudges the wheel or beeps when the car drifts, which matters on the long, straight lanes of the Veterans.

  • Stops

    Emergency braking

Watches for stalled traffic ahead, the kind that piles up at the Westshore work zone.

  • Following

    Adaptive cruise

Holds a gap to the car ahead, on some models together with a radar unit in the grille.

  • Night

    High beams and sign reading

Dips your lights for oncoming traffic and reads posted speed limits.

What we need

Setting up for a calibration

  • Flat, level ground. Steep driveways in older South Tampa streets can be a problem; a flat office lot nearby works.
  • Clear space in front of the car for the technician and any targets.
  • Normal tire pressure and no heavy load in the trunk, so the car sits at its usual height.
  • A dry windshield and no rain falling, which in summer often means a morning slot or a garage.

When your car needs calibration, it is part of the windshield replacement and part of your quote.

Calibration questions from Tampa Bay

Not sure what your car has? Call (727) 270-8521 with the VIN ready.

Does my car even have a camera on the windshield?

Stand outside and look at the glass behind the rearview mirror. A dark plastic housing with a small lens, usually inside a dotted black border, is the camera. You can also text your VIN to (877) 350-5962 and we will look it up.

The dash says everything is fine. Do I still need it?

We follow the vehicle maker's procedure. A camera can be slightly off without lighting up a warning, and then it may steer or brake at the wrong moment.

Does calibration cost extra?

When your vehicle needs calibration, it is included with the windshield replacement and shown in your quote.

A warning light came on after my install. What now?

Call (727) 270-8521 and tell us what the dash shows. If it comes from our work, our lifetime workmanship warranty covers it for as long as you own the vehicle.
