Not the city

Tampa on the envelope, county on the map

Carrollwood, Northdale, Citrus Park and Westchase all get mail addressed to Tampa, and none of them is inside the City of Tampa. They are unincorporated parts of Hillsborough County, counted by the Census as four separate places. Added together, their 2020 counts come to more than 110,000 people, all without a city hall of their own.

For a car owner the difference shows up in a few places. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, not Tampa Police, takes a break-in report here. And your neighborhood rules come from a deed restriction or a homeowners' association, not from a city code, so the association is the one to ask about work in a driveway.

The four places

ZIP codes and what sets each apart

ZIP codes from the Census Bureau's 2020 files that match each place. A ZIP that crosses a boundary is listed under the place that holds most of it.

How it grew

From Lake Carroll to the villages

Carrollwood came first. Matt Jetton planned it in 1959, Sun State Homes built it, and by 1970 more than 900 houses stood near Lake Carroll. Carrollwood Village followed in the early 1970s around a 27-hole golf course, the one called Carrollwood Country Club since 2013. These streets were laid out in the 1960s and 1970s, so check what hangs over the driveway before a storm.

Westchase is a generation newer. The county approved it in 1991, and the Westchase Community Association now runs 28 villages under one set of deed restrictions. West Park Village is its walkable center. With one association over so many homes, its rules are the first thing to read before any work at the house.

The road through it

Veterans Expressway exits

State Road 589 is run by Florida's Turnpike Enterprise and has been cashless since June 2014: you pay by SunPass or by a bill mailed to the plate. Its rebuild from four to eight lanes between Memorial Highway and Van Dyke Road began in 2013. It crosses Citrus Park north to south and runs along Northdale's southwest side.

A SunPass Mini is stuck to the windshield itself, so plan for it when the glass comes out. Our SunPass post on bangautoglass.com, linked below, covers the steps.

Install day

Deed restrictions and driveways

  • Check your association's rules on vendor work in a driveway or the street before booking. In Westchase that means the Westchase Community Association's rules for your village.
  • If the street is off limits, a garage with room to open both front doors is enough for most windshields.
  • Carport under an old oak? Move the car out from under the limbs if a storm is coming the day before the install.
  • Working at Westfield Citrus Park or an office on Dale Mabry? Tell us the lot and where the car is parked; the lot's owner has to allow vendor work.
  • Morning slots go first in summer, before the afternoon storms build over the bay.

Northwest Hillsborough questions

Tell us the place and the street when you call our Tampa line, (727) 270-8521, or text a photo to (877) 350-5962.

My car was broken into in Carrollwood. Do I call Tampa Police?

No. Carrollwood, Northdale, Citrus Park and Westchase are unincorporated Hillsborough County, so the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office takes the report. It has an online report form for some kinds of cases.

Does Florida's windshield rule apply out here?

Yes. It follows your policy, not your address. On a Florida policy with comprehensive coverage, the deductible does not apply to the windshield: $0 Deductible with Comprehensive Coverage.

I live in Town 'n' Country. Is that this page?

Town 'n' Country is the neighbor to the south, and it has its own page on bangautoglass.com. We serve it the same way.

Windshield cracked on the Veterans?

Send the VIN and tell us the village or street. We fit the glass at your home or office, Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6pm.
